Jomo Kenyatta, 1894-1978, was an African statesman and a nationalist. He was the first states prime minister and then the first president from 1964-1978.The Mau Mau rebellion that he had predicted in 1930 erupted in 1952, which was directed against the presence of European settlers in Kenya and their ownership of land. He was arrested on charges of having directed the movement. Jomo Kenyatta University is one of the institutions founded in his memory.
