Skjerkestøl blei truleg rydda til gard i åra 1626–1629. Før den tid reknar ein med at han var øygard (støyl) under Åsland. I 1723 gjekk garden over til å bli brukt som øygard igjen. Mange av gardane nede i [[Kyrkjebygda (Åseral)|Kyrkjebygd]] hadde støylane sine her oppe i heia. <br />
